Loading...The Kansas City Northern Railroad is one of the more unique train-themed activities in Kansas City. If your child likes trains, this is a must! Kids and parents purchase tickets at the small train station, board the colorful miniature train, and take a ride around a half-mile mile track. Your kids will love to hear the train bell and yell as they go through the train tunnel!
Overall we like the Kansas City Northern Railroad because:
- Entertainment for all ages
- Can be a quick morning or afternoon activity – if there is a wait, the line moves quickly
- Kids can learn about the history of trains (just ask a volunteer – they are fantastic!)
- After the train ride, you can enjoy a few miles of new paved walking trails near the train station

Ages: The Kansas City Northern Railroad is great for all ages. All kids will be amazed by the size of the train, the ride around the track, and the chance to ring the large train bell. It is a half mile track, but you circle twice around the track per ride. It is about a 5 minute activity – perfect if it is a hot day. The train is also handicap accessible.
Check out the nature trail: If you have time – follow the trail that leads behind the “train station”. It is a new paved walking path put in by the city. It goes over a creek and into the woods. It is a wide walking trail with railings to help kids and adults up the hills. You can head out for a short walk or, if your child is like mine, take a few minutes to throw some rocks into the creek. Be sure to bring water – it can get hot.
Insider tips:
- Bring water on a hot day. There is not much natural shade around the waiting area.
- Bring some cash – the train ride is only $0.50, but the train is run by an all-volunteer crew and they need donations to keep the train running.
- Pack a snack – there are some tables and open space for a nice picnic.
- Restrooms are located in the Community Center across from the train station.
